Scripture for the Week: John 3:16 // August 20, 2023 (Sunday)

John 3:16 (NIV)

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16 might be one of the most widely read and most memorized verses in the entire Bible. As a young boy or girl, you must have learned this verse while attending Sunday School. Not only you, but almost every Christian, whether they are a young child or an adult, who is new to Christian faith, might have heard this verse repeatedly as they began their life with Jesus. Although, God, being righteous and holy, punishes the sin of humanity, this tiny single verse tells us how wide and long and high and deep is the love of God for humanity (as Apostle Paul mentioned in Ephesians 3:18). When we read the Bible again and again, we can understand that out of all the verses in the Bible, this verse could be the condensed form of the entire gospel message. If we read this verse very closely and carefully, we can notice that there are several layers of significant spiritual substance inside of it for our benefit, such as:

  • It talks about God,
  • It talks about God’s One and Only Son (Jesus Christ),
  • It talks about the world created by God,
  • It talks about love, specifically God’s love for the world,
  • It talks about the human race, whom God created in His image and likeness,
  • It talks about belief and disbelief,
  • It talks about life and death

According to Genesis 1:1, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. This verse takes us back before everything we hear and see and smell and feel came into existence, that is, when there was nothing but God – a self-existent Being who created the heavens and the earth and everything in it, as per Psalm 24:1. This God, who is Omniscient (all-knowing), Omnipotent (all-powerful), Omnipresent (all-present), and the source of love and compassion, created human beings, and he created them in the image and likeness of Himself. God created them absolutely sinless but their freewill caused them to disobey God’s command and, thus, they sinned against their creator God. Yet, God, in His mercy, did not abandon them in their lost state but loved them and came down to earth as Jesus, and died on behalf of them on the cross, so that anyone who believes in Him will be justified and saved from sin. Acts 4:12 states that Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. This means, redemption of the mankind is initiated by God and the action plan is prepared and implemented by God and fulfilled by God. Micah 7:18 states, Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. Our role in the entire process of our salvation is to believe and abide in Him. This is the core message of Christian gospel.

Hello friend, thank you for reading the above-mentioned Bible verse and the written note. Let me ask a question before you close this browser: Are you a disciple of Jesus Christ? If so, walk with Him every moment of your life, be strengthened spiritually, and live a life worthy of His calling. If you are not yet a disciple of Jesus Christ, it is not too late for you to come and follow Him and become a beneficiary of His saving grace. May the Lord God Almighty bless you and strengthen you as you grow daily in the Lord Jesus Christ! Amen!
