Exodus 15:11-13
Who among the gods is like you, Lord? Who is like you – majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders? … In your unfailing love you will lead the people you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling.
Hallelujah! Glory to God! As we all continue to expand our daily walk with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we can be assured that He has been good to us throughout the past week. Doubtlessly, we can testify that He has blessed us with His presence, protection, and provision that makes us feel better and stronger in our daily walk with Him. His loving kindness assures us that He will love and care for us and will stand for us in times of troubles. He will fight for us when the enemy is strong and powerful than us. Yes, indeed, God fight for His people as they walk in faith and in obedience to His righteous laws and decrees and commands.
The Lord has blessed us with a very significant Scripture passage for our SftW meditation this week that is taken from Exodus 15:11-13 (mentioned above). This passage is part of the song of praise Moses and rest of Israelites sang following their safe crossing of the Red Sea while the Pharaoh’s army was drowned and destroyed in the same Red Sea. Moses and rest of the Israelites with him have seen the marvelous deeds the Lord has done for their sake with His great and awesome power, which included (i) their deliverance from the power of Pharaoh [which marked the end of their slavery/bondage in Egypt]; (ii) parting the overflowing Red Sea for them to cross over; and (iii) destroying the enemies by the Red Sea. As a result, with a gratitude of heart and with one voice, they were praising and worshipping the Lord their God saying Who among the gods is like you, Lord? Who is like you – majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders (Exodus 15:11) for delivering them from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt and parting the overflowing Red Sea. What we can learn from God’s action is that while God caused the flowing force of the Red Sea water to stand still to make way for His people to cross over to the other side of the river in order to safeguard His people from their enemies, He used the force of the same water to destroy their enemies who chased after them to destroy them. We can also take one another example from the Scripture regarding God’s protection and destruction by water in a similar way: when we read through Genesis 6:1-9:29 where we can see that God used the flood water to save Noah and his family from perishing while putting an end to the wicked generation of people who did not take Noah’s message of warning seriously in order to save themselves from the mass destruction.
We can understand from reading the passage of Exodus 15:11-13 that it focuses on declaring (i) God’s unmatched holiness and majesty in comparison with other gods (if there are any); (ii) God’s faithfulness and loving kindness toward His people; (iii) God’s deliverance and redemption of His people; (iv) the new life and salvation in and through Him; and so on. Moses and rest of the Israelites celebrate God’s victory and supremacy over the Egyptians and Red Sea. They were singing this praise and worship victory song to glorify God and declare that there is no God like Jehovah – the Lord God Almighty. From all that we have learned from the above discussion is that Yahweh [YHWH], the Lord God Almighty, nullified the power of the so-called gods of Egypt, such as the Egyptian gods of Nile and other rivers; the god of creation, fertility and birth; the gods of the soil/earth, sun, moon, water, desert and so on; the god of crops and cattle; the god of life and death; and so on. By experiencing God’s mighty power and awesome deeds, Moses along with rest of the Israelites declares that there is no god like the Lord God Almighty (YHWH) who is majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders, and the only source of steadfast love and profound compassion (Exodus 15:13). This indicates that the Lord God Almighty who created the heavens and the earth and everything in them including human beings in His image and likeness (refer to: Genesis 1:1-2:3) is holy and majestic in His existence. Prophet Isaiah had similar experience as he heard in his vision of heaven that the seraphim calling out to one another saying: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory (Isaiah 6:3), which establishes the fact that He is an incomparable God and His holiness and power, and majesty and loving kindness and compassion and righteousness and justice and so on exceeds above all other so-called gods in the entire universe. He is better and more powerful than any king/ruler who lived or lives on earth and better than any human beings living or ever lived on earth. This is the reason the Psalmist said: It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes (Psalm 118:8-9).
Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, as we conclude our this week’s SftW meditation, let us place our complete trust in the Lord our God who loves us without any set boundaries and saves us in times of troubles that come across our lives. As the children of Israel feared the Lord and placed their trust in Him when they saw the awesome deeds God had done on their behalf including delivering them from the power of Pharaoh, parting Red Sea to make safe passage for the to cross over to the other side, drowning the best of Pharaoh’s officials and fighting men in the Red Sea, God’s ever-present existence with them in the form of cloud during day time and pillar of fire in the night and so on (Exodus 14:19-20, 31), let us also fear the Lord our God and place our trust in Him for everything He has been doing for us. Remember, the Lord our God has been faithful to us and, now, believe that He will remain faithful to us as God remains the same at all times (refer to: Numbers 23:19; Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8; James 1:17). May the Lord God Almighty bless us all! Amen!
